GENERAL INFORMATION TO ALL NEW STUDENTS

1.LOCATION

Maseno University (MSU) is a Public University located along the Kisumu-Busia Road. The University is 25 kilometers North West of Kisumu County and is served by several Public Service Vehicles which operate from Kisumu town. Several buses also ply the route from Nairobi to Busia and some have their offices right within Maseno Town Center.

The University has one constituent college namely, Tom Mboya University College (TMUC) in Homa-Bay County and two campuses, namely, Main Campus situated in Maseno Township and Kisumu Campus situated within Central Business District (CBD) off Jomo Kenyatta Avenue and the eCampus, a virtual campus domiciled in Varsity Plaza, Kisumu City. In addition, the University is in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Technology (IAT), Regional Institute of Business Management (RIBM), and Kenya Institute of Special Education, all situated in Nairobi. 2.IMMIGRATION

All non Kenyan citizens MUST be in possession of VALID PASSPORT before arriving in Kenya. Temporary travel documents are not acceptable to the Immigration Authorities in Kenya.

In addition, all non-citizens must obtain re-entry permits from their own territorial Immigration Departments to cover the duration of their study and MUST carry along their passport with them when coming to register at the University. Maseno University Joining Instructions

1.LOAN AND BURSARY

Kenyan students who wish to apply for the Kenya Government loans should complete the necessary forms. The Higher Education Loans Board forms can be accessed from their website www.helb.co.ke

The completed forms should be returned to Higher Education Loans Board offices or deposited at all huduma centres country wide through the address below:

2.MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Admission into the University is subject to receipt of a satisfactory medical report. Students are therefore required to undergo a medical examination by a recognized Government medical practitioner before coming to the University. Forms MSU/JI/4, are intended for this purpose and should be downloaded from the University website www.maseno.ac.ke, filled, signed and returned to the University. 3.MASENO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ MEDICAL SCHEME

Maseno University operates a medical scheme for all admitted students where each student is expected to pay a non-refundable compulsory medical fee of Ksh. 2,500/= per Year, to enable him/her benefit from outpatient services at the University Health Unit.

4.IN-PATIENT TREATMENT

The University Health Unit offers only Out-Patient services to students. Students who require In Patient treatment will be referred to the District General Hospital, and shall settle the bills required for those services. All students are encouraged to have in their custody copies their parents/guardian NHIF cards and national IDs while on campus. For those without, they should make arrangements to register at NHIF offices or at Huduma Centres country wide.

NB: Students are advised to bring mosquito nets for their use while at Maseno.

5.DENTAL AND OPTICAL TREATMENT

Any student having/suspecting eye problem(s) should consult opticians and, where need be, get spectacles before reporting for studies at the University. Students with dental or eye problems will be directed to the District Hospital for treatment.

6.SPECIAL MEDICAL CONSENT FORM MSU/4

Parents or guardians of students are requested to sign the special medical consent form MSU/JI/4 for emergency operation(s).

7.MEALS

Maseno University runs cafeteria services in the Main Campus, which are operated, on a Pay- as-You-Eat basis. Students are therefore expected to pay for their meals. The average cost of meal is about Kshs.100/=. Therefore a student would require a minimum of Ksh.200/= per day.

Students are advised to carry about Kshs.6,000/= to cover the cost of meals per month. There are also many other eating outlets in Maseno shopping centre and around the other campuses charging competitive prices for meals.

8.ACCOMMODATION

The University offers accommodation facilities to all students admitted at the Main Campus. The rooms are allocated on a first come first served basis. The University accommodation is charged at Kshs. 3,500/= per semester for out-catering rooms and 5,500/= per semester for self-catering rooms. Kisumu campus does not offer accommodation. Students

admitted to the campus are advised to contact office of the Director, Kisumu Campus for direction.

9.BOOKS AND STATIONERY

The University Bookshops have adequate supplies for books and stationery at reasonable prices. It is estimated that a student needs Kshs.9,000/= to cater for books and stationery. The money is meant for students to purchase books, stationery and photocopying services during their stay at Maseno. Do not pay this money to the University account.

10.PERSONAL EXPENSES

Students will require extra money for personal expenses.

11.CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Arrangements have been made to provide a wider programme of co-curricular activities. The Games Department will provide a list of activities to all students. Please note that co- curricular activities are essential for total human development and students are encouraged to participate in the games. Students are expected to come with their own games kits, two pairs of short(s) men, gym skirts/tunic (women).

12.TUITION FEES AND OTHER FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS

Please note that NO student will be registered in the University without paying in full the required fee. All payments should be made through the respective University accounts as stipulated in the fee structure. Maseno University Joining Instructions

13.DEFEREMENT OF STUDIES

Those who wish to defer their studies to the next academic year for one reason or another, should visit the University website(www.maseno.ac.ke) to download the deferment form, complete it and return to the Registrar, Academic & Student Affairs at least one month before the reporting date.

Unless completely necessary the University does not encourage deferment of studies. Take note that deferments are allowed for a maximum of two (2) Academic Years
