Welcome to the School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management (STHEM), Moi University. The School aims at offering insights into the real-world problems and issues confronting the tourism, travel and hospitality sectors at the local, national, regional and international levels. It is at the forefront in bridging training needs and gaps identified in Kenya Vision 2030, National Tourism Policy and the Ministry of Tourism’s Strategic Plan. The School offers a wide range of programmes at diploma, undergraduate and post graduate levels. The programmes are industry-relevant and seek to equip graduates with a perfect blend of theory and creative approaches needed to chart a career based on excellence with a focus on managing the challenges inherent in the tourism, travel and hospitality sectors. The school boasts of offering a variety of foreign languages, including French, Spanish, German and Chinese. This is out of the realization that tourism and hospitality cannot be offered without a blend of foreign languages. The School has put in place programmes to enhance the students’ welfare and tap into student’s creativity and talent. Students’ professional bodies such as Tourism Association of Moi University (TAMU) and Hospitality Association of Moi University (HAMU) have been instrumental in promoting students professional welfare.

To preserve, create and disseminate knowledge through quality and relevant teaching and research; to work with stakeholders to facilitate expansion and development of Tourism,
Travel, Event and Hospitality sectors for the betterment of society.

Diploma Courses

The diploma programmes within the school of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management aims at producing highly, but broadly inter-disciplinary oriented professionals in aspects of tourism, travel, hospitality and events management. The diploma curricula have been prepared in line with the needs of the tourism, travel and hospitality sectors; and practitioners in the current dynamic and competitive global economies and covers all relevant disciplines of management. As such, graduates of the diploma programs are expected to be competent to handle common tourism, travel, hospitality and events practices as well as becoming the forefront supervisors and managers that are able to advice on routine decision making process. The graduates would be at an advantage position to find career opportunities in various sectors, particularly in the public, private and corporate sectors.

Undergraduate programmes

Undergraduate programmes within the School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management emphasizes student centered learning approach in which the main training characteristics include combinations of problem based learning, project oriented work-based and cooperate learning. In problem based learning sessions, students are given different tasks related to topics under study where they are expected to do research and present in class. This approach to teaching has given our graduands an edge in the industry since they learn about case studies of anticipated scenarios they will encounter in the industry and they simulate methods of dealing with and making decisions about different occurrences. Further, the training in the school emphasises practical work, fieldwork and industrial attachments in keeping with the Kenya Vision 2030, National Tourism Policy, the Tourism Strategic Plan, and the Moi University Vision and Mission.
